When everything changes

Change is something we have come to expect—new technology, new roads, new cars, new devices, entirely new ways to work and play.  Change has become the unchanging normal.

Yes, but what happens when change of a totally unwelcome kind suddenly assaults us?  We begin to feel unsettled, anxious, adrift. Why is this happening? Fundamental questions present themselves – questions we may never have asked before.  What is my life?  Who am I?  What is the purpose of all this?

Searching for answers to these questions has been the occupation of humanity since the beginning of time.  We must have meaning to live well.  Meaning is a basic human need.

Life is fragile, usually hard, and it passes so quickly.  The elderly know this only too well!  Poets have written of it, philosophers have filled libraries, and every religion on earth offers a world-view that tries to make sense of life’s mysteries.

Even atheists hold to a world-view, though it is necessarily a rather dismal one, because they cannot allow anything beyond the physical world to give it meaning.  What is the truth?  Is there, as any materialist would tell you, only energy, atoms and empty space, nothing more?

No, there is much more.

What if there really is a Creator, who is not, of course, part of the universe, but above and beyond it all?

What if this Creator chose to reveal something of Himself through a unique and special nation?

What if, at a point in that nation’s long and painful history, a man appeared among them who began to speak and act as if he himself were the Creator?

What if that man was betrayed and then brutally murdered, willingly dying, even for his enemies?

What if that man physically rose from the dead, just as he had promised he would?

What if the message that man sent out into the world was an invitation to amazing love, a whole new way to live and a wonderful salvation from the coming judgement?

What if you heard about this?  How would you respond?  Would you want to see the evidence?  Would you want to know more?  Would you ask?  Will you?

Having been converted from a nominal Christian background at the age of 17, Neil has spent the last 50 plus years learning too slowly and growing too little. He is, nonetheless, one of many ordinary people increasingly amazed at the grace of God in Jesus Christ and at the wise perfection of this glorious salvation.
