The Secret Thoughts…

The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert – An English Professor’s Journey into Christian Faith” is a remarkable book. It instructs, challenges, and humbles the sincere reader, particularly the Christian reader.

Rosaria Butterfield, by the standards of many, was living a very good life. She had a tenured position at a large American university in a field for which she cared deeply. Her life seemed set and on a predictable course. Then, in her late 30s, Rosaria encountered something that turned her world upside down—the idea that Christianity, a religion that she had regarded as problematic and sometimes downright damaging, might be right about who God was, an idea that flew in the face of the people and causes that she most loved. What followed is the story of what she describes as a “train wreck” at the hand of the supernatural.

It is not a simple “look at me, I was bad, now I’m good” story. Her life was radically changed, not easily and not quickly, but through deep repentance and a determined pursuit of truth. It is like a very broad canvas on which are painted many different scenes and stories. It is a valuable work, much to be commended. It should profoundly challenge Christians at many levels.

I listened to the audio book which the author herself reads, making the listening experience all the more engaging and beneficial.

Neil Buckman
Having been converted from a nominal Christian background at the age of 17, Neil has spent the last 50 plus years learning too slowly and growing too little. He is, nonetheless, one of many ordinary people increasingly amazed at the grace of God in Jesus Christ and at the wise perfection of this glorious salvation.
