Alfred Edersheim’s “The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah” (1883) is a storehouse of information on the background of the New Testament, a harmony of the Gospels and a commentary. This classic work portrays the streets, the marketplaces, the religious conflicts, the people, and all the places of Jesus’ earthly ministry.
Alfred Edersheim (1825 – 1889) was a Jewish convert to Christianity and a Biblical scholar who is remembered particularly for this book. His knowledge of Jewish teaching and history is staggering, while his evident reverence for the Lord Jesus as he narrates His life from the manger to His ascension serves both to edify the reader and to enrich his masterpiece.
It is not a short work – my edition runs to over 1,500 pages – but as a reference it is invaluable. Thankfully, there is a Scripture index that enables any portion of the four gospels to be found within the text, and a number of appendices on related matters.
Highly recommended!
