“You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
I go to a restaurant. Of course I have chosen the one that best suits my tastes – a good menu, pleasant decor, not too noisy nor too expensive. I sit down and wait to be served. Any specials? Oh, good, very nice. I order, I eat (sometimes it’s good, sometimes not so good), I pay and I leave.
I did not design the restaurant. I did not set out the tables. I did not cook or clean or wash dishes. Why should I? I pay them to do all that. They need me to stay in business. They’re glad that I came. I am a customer.
It’s Sunday. I go to the meeting. Of course I have chosen the one that best suits my tastes – a good variety of activities, pleasant decor, not too noisy nor too expensive. I sit down and wait to be ministered to. Anything special? Oh, good, very nice. I sit, I listen (sometimes it’s good, sometimes not so good), I contribute and I leave.
I did not plan the meeting. I did not set out the chairs. I did not pray or share anything or care for anyone or clean up afterwards. Why should I? I give my offering and others do all that. They need me to keep the meeting going. They’re glad that I came. I am a Christian.
Oh Christian! Is that all that the Lord Jesus died for? Isn’t there more on His heart for you? Do you only know religion, but nothing of the wonderful salvation to which He calls you?
Stop! Take stock! Change direction! Be certain, absolutely certain, that you are His!
“Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27)
